Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu is a functional, application-base martial art and is Hanshi Patrick McCarthy's modern interpretation of Chinese and Okinawan old (martial art) school practices. Classes are designed to be enjoyable while at the same time developing the students respect for others and themselves. This often leads to an increased self awareness and self confidence, especially in younger students. Hanshi McCarthy regularly travels the world teaching seminars focusing on Kata application and associated two person drills and has written many books and produced several DVD's dealing with these issues, most notably his translation of "the Bubishi", widely regarded as "The Bible of Karate" The training involved with Koryu Uchinadi combined with Sensei Kings knowledge off fitness training provides a unique opportunity for the student to not only improve their ability to defend themselves but also to increase their levels of fitness and strength. Hanshi McCarthy has studied the old katas and early training practices and has developed theories and applications from the kata which are as brutally effective today as they were when first developed by the early masters. For those who have trained in the martial arts, or patterns, kata, often have little relevance to "real fighting" and are just a means of progressing through the ranks. The hallmarks of Koryu Uchinadi are its two person drills and Kata application, which teach timing, distancing and spontaneous functionality. In addition to teaching Koryu Uchinadi, Sensei King is a qualified and practicing Personal Trainer and Massage Therapist working from his home based clinic and Gym. Classes are suitable for school aged children through to adults with a completly systematized curriculum which is methodically delivered to make learning easy for the beginner student but still challenging for the advanced martial artist. Having commenced his training in 1970, Sensei King has over 38 years experience and holds instructor ranks in 4 styles as well as ranks in other systems. The head instructor of the Medowie and Clarence Town schools is Sensei Bob King, 4th Dan. Sensei King is also the current NSW Chief Instructor. Classes are currently being held in Medowie on Thursday Evenings and Saturday Mornings and in Clarence Town on Monday evenings. Koryu uchinadi incorporates punches, in other words, nerve point strikes and ground fighting to effectively deal with HAPV's (Habitual Acts of Physical Violence), throws and takedowns, strangles, joint manipulation, kicks, the kind of attacks you would find in a real life confrontation.
